Maths

Billesdon C of E Primary School uses the White Rose Maths Scheme to guide our teaching and learning of Maths.  The schemes of work are currently being updated for 2022-23 and the whole year progression map will become available soon.

Intent

At Billesdon Church of England School, we strive for our children to be successful and proficient mathematicians who can recall mathematical facts rapidly, solve problems independently and use their mathematical reasoning to develop their critical thinking and understand Maths in a more meaningful way. This will provide them with the essential life skills required to be financially competent and understand and contribute to the world around them, whilst allowing them to solve a wide range of problems. The structure of the mathematics curriculum, across school, using The White Rose scheme, shows clear progression in line with age related expectations. Teaching curriculum content in blocks allows children to explore skills and knowledge in depth and gain a secure understanding of subject matter. Key knowledge and skills are also revisited regularly to embed learning.

Implementation

The curriculum is taught to allow linear progression of skills across our teaching and learning and is designed to be achieved at the end of KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 with mastery and challenge embedded for all.

Impact

Through the explicit teaching of the Mathematical skills, both the teachers and the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. Formative assessment is ongoing and our assessment systems enable teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of learning and the progress the pupils have made over time. End of unit assessments are carried out at the end of each unit of work and alongside SATs papers in Years 2 and 6.

Mathematics in EYFS

The first few years of a child’s life are especially important for Mathematics development. Having sound early mathematical knowledge has been proven to go hand in hand with a proficient reading ability and better social skills.

The objective in Early Years is to ensure that all children develop firm mathematical foundations in a way that is engaging and appropriate for their age.

There are six key areas of early Mathematics learning which underpin everything the children will encounter as they progress through their Maths learning journey at Primary School and beyond.
